Four Apollo Theatres around the country
One of the best things to do in your spare time is to go to the theatre. Theatre is one of the most popular forms of entertainment in England. There are hundreds of theatres all over the country, and no matter where exactly you live, you are definitely be able to find one nearby that has performances up to your liking. Theatre will transport you to a whole new world, and coincidentally it would be a great way to distress after a strenuous home removal. Let’s have a look at several theatres across the big cities in England that have Apollo in their name:
- The West End Apollo Theatre is located in the very heart of London, on Shaftesbury Avenue in the City of Westminster. The building, which today holds a Grade II listing, was designed by the prominent architects Lewin Sharp and Henry Lowenfeld and was officially opened in 1901. Today the Apollo Theatre is currently managed by the Nimax Theatre, created by Nica Burns and Max Weitzenhoffer in 2006 precisely with the purpose of purchasing and operating the theatre. Nell Gwynn featuring Gemma Arterton is a notable play from the current 2016 season.
- Another Apollo theatre on the territory of London is the Apollo Victoria Theatre. It is, again, to be found in the West End of London, in Westminster. This time however you are going to have to look for it across Victoria Station (hence the name) on Wilton Road. Originally, when the Apollo Victoria opened in the 1930, it was intended to be a cinema, but soon it became one of the most prominent scenes for musical theatre in the capital. For the past decade, the flagship production of the Apollo Victoria is the musical Wicked, which is one of the finest examples in the genre.
- Despite the fact that the current name of the next venue on our list is New Theatre Oxford, for a considerable portion of its history – between 1977 and 2003 – the place went by the name of Apollo Oxford. With a capacity of 1800, it is the major commercial theatre venue in Oxford and home to the Oxford Dramatic Society. The art deco interior of the theatre is the work of P. Bennet and Sons, a prominent architecture company from the 1930s. Unlike the previous buildings, this one does not have a listing with the English Heritage.
- O2 Apollo Manchester, often simply called The Apollo or The Apollo Manchester is a rather large theatre and concert venue in Manchester. With a capacity of 3500 – both sitting and standing, it is the largest venue that goes by the name Apollo in the country. The interior and exterior art deco style was done by Peter Cummings, Alex Irvine and R. Gillespie Williams. It was originally a theatre and cinema, but in the 1970s it officially became a concert venue alone. The rebranding to O2 Apollo Manchester was done in 2010 and the place became known such since then.
