Six WWII heroes that saved numerous lives
World War II is arguably the darkest chapter in the history of mankind and yet in the midst of all the atrocities there were numerous men and women who risked their lives in order to save orders. Here are some of the most heroic people of the Second World War.
Georg Ferdinand Duckwitz – Georg Ferdinand Duckwitz was a member of the German forces and an attaché for Nazi Germany in Denmark. Despite his affiliation with the Nazi, he warned Hans Hedtoft a local politician about the intentions of Germany against the Danish Jews and by doing so save thousands of lives. Historians believe that Georg Ferdinand Duckwitz single handedly has saved about 95% of the Danish Jew population by arranging their safe reception to the neighboring country of Sweden.
Charles Coward – Known as the “Count of Auschwitz”, Charles Coward was a British soldier who became a prisoner of war during WWII. During his time at Auschwitz, he was appointed as a Red Cross liaison officer as he spoke German fluently. He used his position to smuggle food to the Jewish inmates and even help some of them escape. He is also known for infiltrating the Jewish barracks for one night, so that he can witness the atrocities and be used as a witness after the end of the war. Giorgio Perlasca – Italian, Giorgio Perlasca saved over 5.000 Hungarian Jews from deportation into death camps by posing as the Spanish consul-general to Hungary. His fake identity allowed him to issue visas and arrange the save passing of the Jews from Hungary to Spain. Once his story got out after the war he was awarded numerous decorations by Italy, Hungary and Spain. He is also recognised as one of the greatest war heroes by the Israeli government.
Jack Churchill – John Malcolm Thorpe Fleming Churchill was a British soldier like no other. He fought the Second World War by using a Scottish broadsword, longbow and arrows. He is credited to have recorded the last longbow and arrow killing in action during the Battle of France in 1940. José Arturo Castellanos Contreras – San Salvadorian army colonel and diplomat saved an estimate of 25.000 Swiss Jews and 15.000 Easter Europeans by granting them Salvadorian visas and passports, and arranging their transport to the Central American country. After the war he was recognised by numerous European countries as a hero of war and is acknowledged by several international organisations as one of the greatest rescuers during World War II.
Dimitar Peshev – Dimitar Peshev was a renowned politician who during his career has been the Bulgarian Minister of Justice and the Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly of Bulgaria. During World War II he opposed the local pro-Nazi government and stopped the deportation of approximately 50.000 Bulgarian Jews despite being under pressure by Bogdan Filov, the Prime Minister of Bulgaria.
