Why is the City of London such an important place?
We have no doubt that London’s City is among the most crucial locations on the map of Europe, and why not the world today. But what are the reasons for such a thing? Here we are going to try explaining just a couple of those which will give a clearer view on the things that make the City so great.
Historic background
There is no way in which we can start explaining the current position on the map of the world of such an old city as London without burying ourselves in the facts from previous ages. First and foremost, Londinium was established by the Romans in the first century AD as a military camp. The conquerors chose this exact location on the banks of the River Thames because of its evident strategic benefits. The River offered quick and relatively easy access to the sea, while at the same time protected the camp from at least two sides. This important geographical feature actually contributed to the future development of what was to become the capital of one of the greatest countries in the world. During the Middle Ages, London remained a relatively small settlement, but the Norman Conquest made it the capital of the newly established kingdom – which solidified the future of city. In the next centuries London became a political, commercial and cultural centre, first of Europe, and with the creation of the Colonial Empire – of the world too.
The City of London – a modern day financial centre
At present, the annual turnover from financial transactions being made on the territory of London amounts for greater numbers than any other place on the face of Earth. There is hardly a big corporation or financial institution that does not have its headquarters or at least major offices in the City which contributes greatly to the status that London enjoys. For example, stats from office removals in Aldgate clearly show that this particular ward is dominated by the insurance industry.
The face of modern England
The areas in and around the City of London are some of the most iconic locations in the capital and England as a whole at the present moment. Those are known to tourists and generally in popular culture. Places such as Blackfriars are heavily featured on film because of the well preserved Victorian architecture they boast, mainly in productions of Sherlock Holmes, David Copperfield and others. Domestic and commercial removals in the area of Barbican, one of the best known housing estates in the City of London are on a particular rise in recent years, because even though the City is not a very popular place to live – it is crowded and always busy – more and more people prefer to start living here for many reasons in recent years. Naturally, the city and the surrounding areas are home to iconic landmarks such as:
- Buckingham Palace
- Big Ben
- London Bridge
- The Eye
- Piccadilly Street
